RecHeat®
A unique and patented heat exchanger technology for recovering waste heat from molten slag in the steel industry. The heat energy produced is 100% emission-free and can be used, for example, to dry side stream materials.
From waste heat into a valuable resource
From an environmental point of view, the waste heat of slag is one of the largest unused energy potentials of the steel industry, as the temperature of molten slag at the time of pouring can be up to 1600 °C. One ton of molten slag contains about 1-2 GJ (280-550 kWh) of heat energy. Typically, slag is cooled by pouring it into a slag field and allowing the heat to react with the outside air. Another common option is to use large amounts of water to temper the slag. Neither option utilizes the enormous heat recovery potential of slag.

Operating principle
RecHeat® consists of a steel structure with a large heat transfer surface. The slag poured on top of the device heats the air blown through the structure, which can be used in many different applications. RecHeat® can be used to recover 20 – 35% of the thermal energy contained in the slag.
Clean energy and improved slag quality
The heat produced with RecHeat® can replace primary energy sources. Thermal energy can be utilized, for example, for drying material fractions generated at the plant with inexpensive and emission-free energy. Thus, the cost efficiency of the overall process can be significantly improved. In addition to heat recovery, RecHeat® accelerates slag cooling, which affects the properties of the cooled slag structure. . The use of RecHeat® improves the factory’s overall energy and material balance and acts as one step towards zero-waste goals of steel mills.
Industrial system
The production-scale RecHeat® system contains several RecHeat® modules and one or more ModHeat® dryers with the necessary additional equipment. By using several RecHeat® modules, the slag handling capacity of the system can be increased and hot air is produced evenly for the needs of the drying process. The RecHeat® system is integrated into the slag field’s existing infrastructure and operations, and thus processing can be done with existing personnel and equipment.
