ModHeat offers scalable industrial-scale drying capacity with a small footprint. The dryer can therefore be placed close to the generated material or waste heat source, which makes the solution flexible for many different needs and installation locations. ModHeat® includes advanced automation features that assist in the effortless operation of the process. The system is cost-effective in terms of both investment and operating costs.

Utilization of waste heat as an energy source
Operating principle
The ModHeat® dryer works on the counter-current principle. Heated air is used as the drying medium, which is blown into the lower part of the dryer against the material bed. The dryer consists of five drying levels along which the material bed is moved using a mechanical blade system. ModHeat®’s modular level structure enables the construction of a large drying area with a small footprint. In addition, the structure enables a long reaction time of the drying air and the material to be dried, and thus the maximum utilization of energy for moisture removal.
Advanced automation
In the development of the dryer, extra focus has been put into advanced automation features, so that it would meet even the most demanding customer requirements. ModHeat® dispenses, operates and monitors the process automatically and ensures the quality of the final product according to pre-programmed specifications. The system can be controlled locally or remotely and can be connected as part of the factory’s distributed control system (DCS integration). The system is based on the versatile Siemens S7 automation system, which enables extensive customization and connectivity to existing systems and processes.
Flexible energy sources
The ModHeat® dryer can use several different heat sources in the drying process. The energy source to be used and the related equipment are selected and designed together with the customer to be suitable for the requirements created by the installation location, the material and the desired drying result. The dryer is designed in such a way that the utilization of available waste heat is effortless and efficient. Waste heat is often of low value and its availability may be limited. The system can also utilize several heat sources at the same time to achieve sufficient heat output. Utilization of waste heat lowers the total costs of drying and contributes to the energy balance of the production plant and the goals of sustainable development. Through the utilization of waste heat, the operating costs of the drying process can be reduced by up to 70% compared to the use of primary energy.
The overall system
In addition to the dryer, the ModHeat dryer system consists of additional devices selected or designed on a case-by-case basis to manage the material and air flows of the entire process from start to finish. The additional equipment to be used is selected according to the customers’ needs and requirements from SFTec’s own products or by utilizing the best available special expertise of subcontractors and partners. SFTec takes care of the suitability of the entire system for the material being processed, taking national and international standards into account.
Material feeding and conveyor solutions
Material management equipment in the system include, for example, feeding hoppers, material dispersers and suitable conveyor solutions.
Air management
In terms of air management, fans, ductwork and exhaust gas management including dust removal can be integrated into the solutions.
Energy production
Options for heat production include hot water, steam, gas burners, bio boilers, electric heaters and flue gases.

In the metal and mineral industry, millions of tons of challenging waste materials are generated every year. The main destination of these materials has been landfilling. The problem with many materials is their high moisture content, which limits the possibilities of further use.
